5 Tips for Traveling with Your Furry Friends

For many people, leaving a pet behind while going on vacation just isn't an option. Your furry friend is part of your family, maybe your best friend, and he or she deserves a vacation as well. Fortunately, more and more places for accommodations are becoming "pet friendly." In fact, more than half of our Fort Myers Beach vacation rentals allow pets! So if you're looking for a beach vacation that both you and your pet can enjoy together, be sure to give Sea Gypsy Vacation Rentals a call!

Tips for Traveling with Your Pets

Traveling with pets can have it's challenges. Below we offer a few tips for traveling with your furry friends:

1. Make Sure Your Pet is Healthy Enough for Travel.

Before heading out on a long vacation with your pet, you should consider consulting your veterinarian. You want to make sure that your pet is current on vaccinations, and that there are no health risks with taking a long trip, especially if your pet is older. Be sure to let your vet know where you're headed so they can determine the best way to protect your pet from potential risks in that area. Especially when you're escaping the cold weather for a beach destination, it can be easy to forget about fleas, ticks, heart worm preventatives, etc. Don't forget to bring any regular pet medications with you as well!

2. Don't Forget Your Pet Necessities.

You've got a list of things you wouldn't leave the house without, so don't forget to make a list for your pet as well. Things you'll want to be sure to pack could include: pet food, food and water bowls, bottled water, regular medications, flea, tick and heart worm preventatives, cat litter pan with litter and scoop, dog waste bags, leash and collar, bedding, grooming supplies, life vests for dogs, current veterinary contact information, contact information for vet clinics on route and at your destination, proof of current vaccination status and a pet first-aid kit.

Bonus Tip: Be sure to update your pet's identification. No matter how careful you are, pets can escape and get lost in unfamiliar areas. Make sure the ID tag on his or her collar is up-to-date. Include the address of your destination and your cell number. If your pet is micro-chipped, be sure the microchip company has your current contact information, including where you can be reached while on vacation.

3. Allow Your Pet Time to Get Used to a Carrier.

If your pet hasn't done much traveling and isn't used to being in a carrier, be sure to warm them up to it before you head out on a long trip. Make sure the carrier is roomy enough to allow your pet to stand, turn around and lay down. Introduce them to the carrier at home first, and make it comfortable by adding their favorite blanket and some toys inside. You want them to associate positive feelings with the carrier not fear or other negative emotions. Leave the door open at first so they can freely explore being in the carrier. Eventually, try closing the door, gradually extending the amount of time the door is closed.

4. Keep in Mind Traveling Can Be Stressful for Pets.

Just like traveling can stress you out, don't forget that your pets can get stressed as well. If your pet has never traveled before, or at least not for a long distance, he or she could easily become stressed on the journey. We would suggest doing a few trial runs in the car in the weeks leading up to your long trip, gradually extending your trip with each trial drive. Place your pet in a carrier, drive around the block or two and then reward your pet with praise or a treat for behaving in the car.

If you are flying with your pet, be sure to make yourself aware of what's needed to fly with an animal. Make sure you have the proper paperwork and everything you need to make the ride as comfortable for them as possible. While smaller pets may be allow to ride with you in the cabin, larger pets generally have to ride in the cargo bay. Discuss options to help decrease your pet's stress level with your vet before leaving.

5. Be Sure to Make Rest Stops Along the Way.

During long drives, you have to stop regularly to use the restroom, stretch your legs, grab a snack, etc. The same thing goes for your pets as well, especially dogs. Be sure to stop regularly at rest stops or parks to allow your pet not only a bathroom break, but a chance to get out of the carrier and stretch his or her legs. Don't forget to keep a water bowl handy, as well as your doggy waste bags! You might consider having some snacks or treats ready as well, to reward your pet for doing so well on a long trip.

3 Benefits of Owning a Vacation Home on Fort Myers Beach

Do you love the beach? Do you go on vacation every year? Have you ever though about investing in a vacation home in Fort Myers Beach? Instead of renting a home from someone else or staying in a hotel every time you travel to Florida, you could have a place to call your own. Today's blog discusses some of the biggest benefits to owning a second home in Fort Myers Beach, FL.

1. Always Have a Place to Stay for YOUR Vacation.

One of the main benefits of owning a vacation home on Fort Myers Beach is that you always have a place to come to when you're ready for a beach vacation. Need an escape from the cold up north? Want to take the kids out of town for some family bonding over summer break? You don't have to go online and hunt around for a place to stay that meets the needs of your family. You'll have a place to call your own, where you can make memories with friends and family. (Plus, if you're wanting to eventually retire in Florida, this move can give you a head start!)

2. Make Some Extra Income to Offset Expenses.

Another big advantage to owning a second home is the ability to generate some extra income. This rental income can help offset your costs of owning a vacation home. When you buy a Fort Myers Beach vacation property, you can rent it out other guests when you aren't using it. The money you make from those reservations can help you pay the mortgage, property taxes, insurance, maintenance, etc. for the place where you spend your vacations.

3. Build Value Through Appreciation.

Real estate is generally a good investment option. Over time, it typically will appreciate in value. When you are ready to sell your vacation property, you can usually sell it at a higher price and cash out on the profit. In addition, you have the ability to make modifications and improvements to increase the value of your home, therefore pushing up the market value even more.

If you're interested in purchasing property on Fort Myers Beach, we can connect you with some of the best real estate agents that we know and trust because we work with them on a regular basis. Once you've found the perfect property, Sea Gypsy Vacation Rentals can help you with that extra income by finding you quality guests! The best part is, we take care of all the details, from finding the renters to taking the payments and paying the taxes. Contact us today by calling 239-463-0078!

5 Holiday Travel Tips

Christmas and New Years are just around the corner. People all across the country will be traveling, and that means the airports and roads are going to be busy! There's no need to stress though. We've got a list of holiday travel tips that will help you get down here to beautiful Fort Myers Beach without too much chaos. Keep reading for Sea Gypsy Vacation Rentals' tips for traveling this holiday season.

1. Travel at Off-Peak Times.

If possible, try to travel on off-peak days, and travel early or late in the day. If flying, consider departing on the actual holiday, as most people will have left the day before. The airport will likely still be busy, but not as bad. Traveling at odd times, such as early in the morning or late at night can also help you avoid the longest lines. In addition, flight statistics show that planes traveling earlier in the day have a better on-time performance. If you're driving, the best time to hit the road is when others are sleeping, so again early in the morning or late at night. You can always take a nap at  your destination, or if you have a second driver, you can switch off.

2. Head to the Airport Early.

During the holiday season, you're almost sure to see extra long lines at the airport. Checking your bags will take extra time, and so will going through security. There's nothing more stressful than feeling like you might miss your flight because you're stuck in a line. Plan on arriving at the airport extra early. Even if you get there and the lines are surprisingly short, you can relax at the gate knowing that you aren't going to miss your flight. If you're planning to park at the airport, consider getting an advance parking reservation.

3. Be Prepared for Delays.

Whether you are flying or driving to your destination, be prepared for delays. Holiday traffic on the roads or flight delays could have you waiting around a lot. Bring snacks, water, music, books, etc. to keep you entertained in case you get stuck somewhere for an extended period of time. Be sure to have your phone fully charged as well so you can communicate with friends and family about any delays.

4. Ship Your Gifts.

If you're going to be flying to your destination for the holidays, you're better off shipping your gifts instead of bringing them with you. Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. can deliver your gifts to your destination and then you can wrap them once you arrive. This is much easier than dragging all that stuff on your flight with you. If you do travel with gifts, don't wrap them, as security may unwrap them to take a peak at what's inside. Be sure to pad and pack the gifts carefully in your suitcase, as those bags get tossed around a lot. When flying internationally, be sure to check any rules of bringing food or other items that might be confiscated.

5. Remember to Breathe.

Travel can be stressful, especially during the holidays. Remember to breathe, and be nice to people. They're likely just as stressed as you. If things don't go as planned, try to stay calm. Losing your temper is not going to help the situation. Airline employees don't usually respond well to anger, and  you could end up making the situation worse. Whatever the issue, it will likely make for a great story later!

No matter what happens during your travels this holiday season, just keep the end in mind. Eventually you'll be out of the cold and relaxing on the soft sugary sand under the beautiful Florida sun! Sea Gypsy Vacation Rentals is the place to stay this season, we've got just a couple Fort Myers Beach vacation homes left for Christmas and New Years, so call to book today if you haven't already! Happy Holidays!
