11 Local Beaches to Checkout During Your Stay

Most visitors to the beautiful state of Florida come here to spend time on the beach! Southwest Florida is home to some of the best beaches in the country. 1. Fort Myers Beach


No matter where along the island of Fort Myers Beach you're staying, you're sure to be just a short walk to a beach access point. There are more than 30 beach access points all along Estero Blvd. These spots allow access to the full 7-miles of white sugar sand. Just look for the colorful beach access signs! You can also go to Lynn Hall Memorial Park, where you'll find a playground, picnic shelters, a bathhouse and fishing pier. 2. Lovers Key State Park


Located at 8700 Estero Blvd., Lovers Key State Park offers an untarnished 2-mile stretch of beach. Accessible by boardwalk or tram, this beach area is perfect for swimming, shelling or sunbathing. You can also enjoy hiking trails or kayak the canals of this genuine tropical paradise. Explore the serene canals and lagoons, where you'll typically find manatee and shorebirds, or lounge under an umbrella on the shore. This park is a popular romantic destination, and frequently hosts weddings at the gazebo.

3. Dog Beach


Are you bringing your 4-legged friend with you on vacation? Take your furry friends to Dog Beach located at 8800 Estero Blvd. at the south end of the island. This sandy beach offers a place for dogs to roam free in a beautiful beach setting. They can run through the shallow water, plus you'll find free parking & canine showers. There's no better place to spend time with your 4-legged friends!

4. Barefoot Beach Preserve 


Located off Bonita Beach Road on Barefoot Beach Blvd., this beach offers fine sand full of many small shells. If you're looking for some seashells to take home, this beach is the place to go! The surf is gentle, making it a great spot for swimming and sunbathing as well. You're likely to spot a bottle-nosed dolphin or a gopher tortoise here. Kayaking and canoeing are also a popular activities at Barefoot Beach.

5. Lighthouse Beach Park


Located on the Eastern tip of Sanibel Island at 110 Periwinkle Way, this scenic 23-acre park features the Sanibel Lighthouse, a fishing pier, nature trails and more. It's a true family beach, with good shelling, a clear view of the Gulf and plenty of large shade trees. Enjoy a picnic or stroll along the beach, swim in the ocean or go fishing from the pier. Sailing or windsurfing is also popular here. It is the perfect place to experience Florida's nature scene, or just relax on the soft sand as you listen to the waves crashing on the shore.

6. Sanibel Causeway Beaches


For a less busy, more relaxing beach experience head over to the Causeway in Sanibel. Causeway Islands Park is a narrow palm-lined park & beach on a man-made island, great for fishing, kayaking, windsurfing and swimming. This is the perfect place for watching dolphins and enjoying beautiful sunsets. Pull your vehicle right up to the water's edge. While parking is free, there is a $6 toll to cross the bridge from Fort Myers.

7. Bonita Beach Park 


Between Fort Myers Beach & Bonita Springs, you'll find a 2.5 acre beachfront area known as Bonita Beach Park. The park features a boardwalk and swimming area. Sand dunes and coastal vegitation surround a gazebo and several picnic shelters.

8. Bowditch Point Park 


Head to the northern tip of Fort Myers Beach, and you'll find a 17.5 acre park facility. Amenities include a "village deck" for group gatherings, a bathhouse and a boardwalk leading to a picnic area and beach. Activities include birding, canoeing, kayaking, wildlife viewing and swimming.

9. Bowman’s Beach


Located in the middle of the Island of Sanibel, off Sanibel-Captiva Road, is the pristine and quiet Bowman's Beach. This spot is popular for shelling and swimming, as well as windsurfing or sailing. Picnic areas with barbecue grills are also available, so bring some lunch and enjoy a meal on the beach!

10. Turner Beach


Just past the bridge to Captiva sits Turner Beach, a great place for sunsets and romantics. The area offers great fishing from the beach and is also a great place for shelling and surfing. While not ideal for swimming, as it gets deep quickly near the bridge and there's a strong undertow, the sand quality is good for relaxing on the beach. Parking here is very limited.

11. Captiva Beach 


Captiva Beach, located at 14790 Captiva Dr., is known as one of the most romantic beaches around. This quiet beach is open from dawn to dusk and offers amazing sunsets. There is a picnic area and portable restrooms at this beach.
